Advent Day 9: Zechariah 9:9-13

December 13, 2022

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
    righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
    and the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
    and he shall speak peace to the nations;
his rule shall be from sea to sea,
    and from the River[a] to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
    I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
    today I declare that I will restore to you double.
13 For I have bent Judah as my bow;
    I have made Ephraim its arrow.
I will stir up your sons, O Zion,
    against your sons, O Greece,
    and wield you like a warrior's sword.

What great promises has Thou made oh Lord, the God who does not lie, in whom there is no shadow of turning, no deceit. Thou has fulfilled Thy prophecy, for Christ the Savior had come, on a donkey, bringing peace to the warring, freedom to the captives, and hope to those in trouble. Lord, I for one, am grateful for Thy deliverance, and look forward to the day where Thou will complete Thy unfailing promise.

Note the humility of our Savior. When others come in conquering horses with armies of war behind them, Christ comes on a humble donkey. No one would ever believe if were not for Thy grace to unveil to us the righteousness and salvation that Thou has brought. May we not be ashamed of the cross, and how Thou who was humbled to the point of death, brought salvation and peace to all who believeth Thee.

Note also His sovereignty. Nations stand no chance against Thee. All are brought low. Peace is ushered due to Thy rule. Oh Lord! How sovereign and majestic Thou art!

Note finally, how He redeems! He redeems those that no one could redeem. The prisoners in the waterless pit. The oppressed nation before the great and mighty warring nations. Thou is able to redeem them all!
