Advent Day 7: Hebrews 8

December 9, 2022

Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

Hebrews 8:1-7

A new covenant has Thou bestowed upon us oh Lord. It is truly a better covenant. Better because Thou oh Lord Jesus is the High priest who interceded on our behalf, The priests who served in the Old Covenant, have been copies or shadows - declaring the coming and better High Priest who is to come, and now has come and interceding on our behalf. Oh how unfathomable, that my high priest would be Jesus Christ, the son of God. Thy covenant to us made new is indeed better, because Thou has shown the Old Covenant is not sufficient. Thou has called us to look for the better covenant as Thou has said in Jeremiah 31:31-34. Thy new covenant has made the old one obsolete. In making it obsolete, let not my heart think of it lightly and unnecessary. For there cannot be a new covenant without the old. My sins, how grievous they are, will not be made known without Thy old covenant. Without the old, I will not think myself lost and in misery, for the first flicker of light that exposed the darkness of my sin is Thy Old Covenant. Yet I am grateful Oh Lord, for Thy new covenant, for without it Oh Lord, I have no Savior. I remain in darkness, I have no intercessor. I would not know You.

Praise be to God! For Thy new covenant given in Christ Jesus Our Lord.
