2 [a] The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.
You have multiplied the nation;
    you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
    as with joy at the harvest,
    as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
For the yoke of his burden,
    and the staff for his shoulder,
    the rod of his oppressor,
    you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
    and every garment rolled in blood
    will be burned as fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon[b] his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called[c]
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Thy zeal oh Lord, is our hope. Oh Lord, Thy zeal to save Thy people. It is our hope, our only hope. Oh Lord, I am in darkness, in deep darkness. I though I needed a mighty warrior, a great Savior, to save me. I needed something magnificent, someone strong beyond comparison, someone majestic. Yet in my deepest darkness, Thou promiseth a child.

A child? Oh my soul, why do you doubt? Is it because a child is not one who we consider powerful? A child is one who we consider helpless and dependent? Oh my soul, dost Thou ask the LORD, how can a child save me from my deepest darkness?

Oh but this child is not just a child, this child is born, yes a child, but He is also the Son given. And the government, the one in power will be under His rule. His name is called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace! Look at those names oh my soul. This child, though veiled in weakness, is the truest in strength. He is able to deliver you, nay, He is willing to deliver you, nay, He shall deliver you! The Lord’s zeal ensures this.

Oh my soul, dost Thou feel that darkness has overwhelmed thee, that Thy heart is as callous and distant from the Lord be, that Thy sins are to great and numerous to be forgiven thee? Take comfort oh my soul, to the promise of the LORD, fulfiilled in Christ Jesus our Lord, our Great Redeemer, the Child born, the Son given, The Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Cling to Him, Trust in Him, Believe in Him, and Thou shalt no longer perish. For He ho comes to save, shalt give Thee eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Amen.
